Why do those in power fear students
By Sami NEZA
The student strike, spread across all the universities in the country, has so far highlighted a progressive political indicator of coalition governance. As happens when weak governments drag on toward failure, their clock shows a slowing of the pace of reforms. The slow reforms have created the conditions for the country to become extremely criminalized. The state is being shaken by the weight of drug trafficking and prostitution on the long route of their passage to the West. Along this route, this state arrested and jailed today the head of the anti-drug operations unit, while it let drug bosses and police killers go free with ridiculous sentences. The protection of the ties between this criminal business and government officials has made the people lose respect for the police and the government. On the other hand, in its first year in office, the left coalition turned complaints and protests over the high level of taxes, the spread of corruption, the decline in welfare and the rise in state officials’ luxury spending into an anti-democratic experience. The striking example of the beating of Shkodër students on 18 December by police and SHIK forces gave the idea of a frightened country a cultural brutality.
Faced with a political class marked by slow government reshuffles, this generation of students risks becoming the courageous voice of social demands that are being suffocated with brutality.
Their demand to free the prisoners from the protest, to renounce police violence, to guarantee freedom of student organization and to change the conditions of living and studying is becoming a major test for the government before Albanian society.
